“Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness.”
– Oprah Winfrey
The world has been started to shift from the 3rd Industrial Revolution (IR3.0), that brought about the era of digitisation to the 4th Industrial Revolution (IR4.0) where the world will have to embrace an era of innovation and automation next. IR4.0 will bring prominent transformation in the way we work, how work gets done and how performances are measured. Women needs to be a part of this revolution too. 2018 has been dedicated for women’s readiness and inclusion for the IR4.0.
Tahun Memperkasa Wanita 2018 (TMW18) is a national initiative, to empower and drive women into the 4th Industrial Revolution with focused preparation within five strategic clusters including, health, safety, economy, culture and education. This is in line with the government’s efforts to spearhead the development of IR4.0. TMW18 will be filled with programs and activities within the strategic clusters in collaboration with the public and private sectors.
This year will be a year where we want to let ideas take off and efforts are properly executed to attain the outcomes of women in filling up the gap for each cluster. Apart from that, these efforts shall be carried forward annually and with measurable outcomes we will be able to see real changes and impact from the efforts, programs and initiatives.
Efforts and changes to support women empowerment must come from both public and private sectors to drive the community ahead. TMW18 is also a medium to create platforms for women in order to generate initiatives, gain funding, and organising on ground programs related to women empowerment concept. Another important goal is to let every registered programs and events get noticed for its much deserving participation.
Standing on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally bring the needs for transformation, that will alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another. In its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation will be challenging for many and layered with opportunities therefore the response to it must be integrated and comprehensive, involving all stakeholders of the global space, from the public and private sectors to academia and civil society. Our main focus is getting women to be inclusive, give accessibility to opportunities and be ready for the challenges ahead.
The IR4.0 has a profound impact on women in business and workforce. The unstoppable shift from simple digitisation (IR3.0) to innovation based on combination of technologies (IR4.0) is forcing businesses to re-examine the way they do business. However, with challenges comes opportunities. Technology platforms work on sharing economy and have created new ways and lowering barriers of businesses and individuals to create wealth. Making wealth creation accessible to many. These new platform businesses are rapidly multiplying into many new services that women can start to catalyse or be part of.
The IR4.0 will bring about transformation of lifestyle and a need for a dynamic society with its demanding challenges if not prepared for. Women being the foundation of a family, need to be physically, mentally and emotionally able to drive the transformation within their own units apart from the challenges of being in the workforce themselves.
The IR4.0 will also profoundly impact the nature of security particularly cyber security. As the world seeks to embrace IR4.0, cyber security protection must be a top priority in both businesses and society. Women for a long time have become victims of violence, human trafficking and sexual crimes, among others. With the IR4.0, women must actively participate in the prevention of such crimes and equip themselves with cyber security know-how to cope with modern threats.
IR4.0 will change not only what we do but also who we are, affecting our identity such as privacy, ownership, consumption patterns, work-life balance, communication, relationships, skills and career development issues. The current smart phone culture is a case in point, whereby constant connection deprives us of meaningful engagements. Women being the backbone of the family, must lead the cultural change that will in turn affect the society as a whole to redefine our moral and ethical boundaries.
IR4.0 will bring about the needs for new knowledge and skills in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM). Economist and other experts regard the IR4.0 as being driven by breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, the Internet of Things, and other innovative technologies. There needs to be higher inclusivity of women and girls in the STEM space and ecosystem to prepare them for jobs that are yet to exist.
The Malaysian government drafted the National Women’s Policy (NWP) in 1989. The policy formulation has clarified the government’s earnestness toward helping women’s participation in the country. NWP provides guidelines for integrating women’s contributions in the development process of the country.
